Softball splits doubleheader in San Diego

San Jose State (10-6) split Friday’s doubleheader in the San Diego Classic against Brigham Young University (7-9) and Long Beach State (7-8) .

The team started the day off against BYU with a 2-1 win. In the first inning, the Spartans were able to score their only two runs in the game.

Sophomore outfielder Makayla Englestad led off the game with a base hit into left field. Freshman infielder Arianna Miranda hit her second-collegiate home run on the first pitch given to her.

BYU scored in the bottom of the second with an RBI single up the middle from Ari Paulson. SJSU freshman pitcher Jenessa Ullegue recorded her fourth win of the season as junior pitcher Madison Aurin got the save.

In their second game, the Spartans couldn’t keep up with the Beach and lost 5-0. Aurin started the game and gave up a run in the fourth.

Ullegue entered during the inning and didn’t allow anything until the seventh. LBSU scored four runs on an RBI base hit and three-run homer.

Aurin was credited with her first loss of the season as SJSU was held to four hits.

San Jose State will continue the tournament on Saturday with Florida Gulf Coast (7-7) at 11:30 a.m. and Weber State (3-7) at 4:30 p.m.
