Track takes home second and third place finishes at Bronco Challenge

San Jose State men’s and women’s track and field placed second and third for several events at the Boise State Team Challenge indoor meet on Saturday.

Junior Silvia Gutierrez competed in her second collegiate meet and improved her personal record from 49-feet-11.75 to 50-feet-2.00. She was out thrown by Boise State’s Kendra Noneman, who placed first with a top score of 55-feet-7.5.

The distance runners finished their 3,000-meter run back-to-back and earned second, third, and fourth place.

Junior Jennifer Sandoval crossed the finish line with a time of 9:49.34, with Jeanette Zambrano following 9:55.37 and then freshman Evelin Meza at 9:58.90.

The sophomore sprinter, Sarahvaughn King, came in fifth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.52 seconds. The first place winner, Sara King from George Fox, finished at 24.34.

Junior Jayla Williams also improved her season-best at Boise State in the 60-meter hurdles. Williams was fourth in the finals with a personal record of 8.83.

Men’s track and field runners placed high in the Bronco Team Challenge as well.

Senior Craig Huff and junior Jose Pina came in second and third place in the 3,000-meter run at 8:28.05 and 8:30.09.

SJSU freshman sprinter Brendan Manigo ran 7.18 seconds in both the qualifying and final round of the 60-meter dash. He later ran the 200-meter dash in 23.72 seconds.

Women’s and men’s track and field teams will both prepare for the next meet at the Mountain West Championships, starting on Feb. 21.
