Like most visitors to Las Vegas, San Jose State (3-14, 0-5 MWC) left the Sin City empty-handed on Saturday after suffering a 94-56 defeat to UNLV (10-7, 4-1 MWC).
The Rebels played the Spartans’ game and beat them with it. They hit 15 3-pointers on 31 attempts, good for 48 percent en route to a blowout victory. Freshman forward Joel Ntambwe had four threes and led the game with 16 points on 6-11 shooting.
The Spartans, just a game removed from historic performance from three against Utah State, were 3-15 from beyond the arc. Noah Baumann was 1-3 from three for 6 points after scoring 29 on 7 threes versus the Aggies.
Ball movement and turnovers were once again an issue for SJSU. It gave the ball away 15 times to 13 assists. Turnovers especially hurt the Spartans in the second half, when they allowed the Rebels to go on a 20-6 run.
Michael Steadman was the only Spartan to score more than 7 points. He finished with 15 on 7-13 shooting and seven rebounds.
In a tough offensive outing, two Spartan starters, Brae Ivey and Zach Chappell, were held scoreless. Ivey in particular had his worst performance of the season, going 0-2 from the field and only getting on the stat sheet with four turnovers and three personal fouls.
SJSU has now lost eight games in a row, and remains winless in Mountain West play. It will attempt to end both streaks on Wednesday when it travels to Laramie to take on Wyoming at 6 p.m.
