San Jose State swim was a long way from home as it competed in the Minnesota Invitational this past week.
The Spartans made their big splash starting on the first day with two second-place finishes from junior Gabby Heng in the 50 freestyle and the 200 free relay team.
It was clear that the team was most prepared for these events. Heng finished with an astonishing time of 23.24 as two other Spartans followed her closely finishing within the same second.
The 200 relay team had a strong performance as they were less than two seconds behind the first place finisher, University of Utah’s A team.
With 15 teams competing in the invitational, SJSU was familiar with top-10 placings on Day 1. Four Spartans finished the 200 IM in the top ten and were led by senior Taylor Lehr, who finished in seventh.
Day 2 was another great day for the Spartans, especially for redshirt senior Brenna Bushey. She finished third in the 100 fly and was a part of the third place finishing 200 medley relay team.
Heng also continued to place well as she shaved 1.85 seconds off her preliminary time in the 200 freestyle. This resulted in a fifth place finish.
The 100 backstroke provided another good appearance made by the Spartans as Lehr and junior Gabriela Vieira finished less than a second apart, placing fourth and fifth.
Saturday concluded the invitational and the Spartans continued their strong placings. Lehr finished second in the 100 freestyle with Heng right behind her.
The next event was the 200 breaststroke where freshmen Chloe Limargo and Angelika Yngson placed fifth and sixth.
The Spartans were not able to beat out the University of Utah for the finals of 400 relay as they placed second again.
Overall, it was a good showing for the Spartans. They didn’t get any first placings, but they were in the top-10 of nearly every event.
SJSU has a little break until its next meet against UC Berkeley on December 19.
