San Jose State’s cross-country visited the state capital to compete in the NCAA Regional championships this week.
Competition was tough as the Spartans were going against tough teams like Pac-12 leaders Oregon, Stanford and UCLA.
On the leaderboard, the women outperformed the men, finishing ninth of 36 compared to the men’s 12th placing of 29 teams.
It was no surprise that junior Jennifer Sandoval led the women finishing 30th overall. Coming in 12 seconds later was sophomore Kai Bohannon.
On the men’s side, senior Craig Huff was the men’s top finisher at a time of 30:27.4 concluding the race in 42nd place. Huff definitely outshined the rest of his teammates as the next SJSU runner came in 54th place.
It was clear that the men and women worked with different strategies. The men were leading at the one mile mark in 11th place. After that they slowly tapered off.
The women did exactly the opposite, starting off slow and getting a hold of their bearings later to get higher placings.
The faster paced competition proved to be a challenge for the Spartans for their last race of the season.
Some runners will have the chance to move on to the NCAA Championships but it has not been determined.
