Wynne strikes again in 1-0 win over Rebels

The San Jose State women’s soccer team visited Sin City on Sunday for a game against UNLV, and it turned out the same way as almost every other match it has played in the Mountain West Conference slate thus far: close, suspenseful and with the Spartans coming out on top.

An hour into the match, freshman defender Haleigh Wynne put the first and only tally of the game on the board with an 18-yard strike. The goal was her second of the weekend and the season. She also scored the game-winning goal in SJSU’s win over Nevada on Friday.

It was another dominant offensive performance for SJSU with little to show for it, something that is becoming a theme of the season.

The Spartans (6-5-2, 5-1-0 MW) outshot the Rebels (8-5-2, 2-3-1 MW) 15-5 overall and had 11 shots on goal, yet was only able to find the back of the net once. Sunday’s match was the fourth 1-0 win for the team in six conference games so far, and fifth overall.

Senior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau earned her sixth clean-sheet on the year, and only needed to make three saves to do it. The Spartans dominated possession and she rarely needed to get involved.

The win moves SJSU to 5-1 in conference play. The record is good for second in the MW to Boise State, who is still undefeated at 5-0-1.

The Spartans will continue their chase for the conference crown on Friday when they take on Colorado State (5-5-4, 2-2-2 MW) at Spartan Soccer Field.
