Spartans remain undefeated in conference after 2-2 draw with HBU

San Jose State (3-4-2, 1-0-1 WAC) and Houston Baptist (3-2-2, 1-0-1 WAC)  both wanted to end the game undefeated and each team achieved that with a 2-2 score after double overtime.

SJSU had their work cut out for them against Huskies goalkeeper Jorge Cabrera who had only allowed one goal in their past three games and six total for the season.

If the Spartans had any shot at winning they had to be aggressive and score early.

Kalei Tolentino-Perry put SJSU on the board first in the 24th minute to take the early lead. With the assist from  Willy Miranda, the sophomore scored his second goal of the season.

Goalie Alex Clewis held the Huskies scoreless in the first half with three saves.

HBU answered back in the second half scoring a goal early in the 56th minute and took the lead in the 76th minute from Dominick Faletto.

Less than a minute later, the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick with a chance to tie up the game.

Defender Andy Rios fired the ball into the net out scoring his first goal of the season knotting up the game at two.

“We played very well, but should have put them away with a second goal in the first half. In the end, a point on the road is good,” SJSU head coach Simon Tobin told SJSU Athletics.

The Spartans got away with a tie but very well could have walked away a win. They doubled the Huskies in shots 24 to 12 and had many more opportunities to score having 15 corner kicks.

In the double overtime, HBU managed only one shot while SJSU had six.

The Spartans will search for their second conference win on Sunday as they face UMKC who carry a five game losing streak.
