Becerra shines, but two late goals cost Spartans in home opener

San Jose State women’s soccer lost 2-1 to No. 19 Santa Clara University in its home opener on South Campus Friday night.

Momentum was high for the previous Mountain West champs, but it wasn’t enough for the Spartans to take the win.

After a dry first half, junior forward Jamilecxth Becerra put the Spartans on the board first and netted the team’s first goal of the season in the 62nd minute on an assist by freshman forward Jada Wilson.

SJSU’s one-goal lead on the top-20 opponent lasted about 10 minutes, as the Broncos turned on their aggressive gene and took control the rest of the way.

The Broncos out-shot the Spartans 21-5, and five minutes after their 72nd minute netter, they got another one passed SJSU senior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau.

Simoneau outshined Bronco goalkeeper Melissa Lowder with five saves on the night compared to none from Lowder.

The Spartans will aim for their first win of the season as they visit Portland University next Friday at 8 p.m.
