Women’s water polo in Berkeley for MPSF championships

By Madyson Montoya @MadysonMontoya

Women’s water polo makes its last splash of the season this weekend at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in Berkeley.

The Spartans have not won a conference match all season.

Last year the team won one conference match against CSU Bakersfield, a team they did not face this year.

The first opponent is No. 2 Stanford on Friday. The two teams have experience playing against one another as this will their fourth matchup this season.

SJSU had its best game against Stanford last Sunday, but lost by seven points. This is improvement since Stanford won the two previous matches by more than 10 points.

The Spartans have a busy day on Saturday with matches against UCLA and Arizona State.

The Bruins claimed victory by 11 points in their last match with the Spartans. Arizona State had a smaller gap of four points.

The Spartans have proven that they are able to score, but defense needs to be improved this weekend.

Decreasing the point gap throughout the entire match is something that the team has not experienced against any conference opponent.

All of the teams that the Spartans will face this weekend are top 10 nationally-ranked teams.

The first match starts on Friday at 11 a.m.
