Spartans, Sun Devils meet in the water for first conference win

By Madyson Montoya (@MadysonMontoya):

San Jose State’s women’s water polo is looking to make a splash against its next conference opponent, No. 6 Arizona State on Friday at West Valley.

The Spartans (9-14 0-2 MPSF) and the Sun Devils (14-7, 0-3 MPSF) have both yet to win a conference game.

ASU was able to keep up with conference leaders UC Berkeley and UCLA with a closer score than SJSU.

The last time the Spartans were home, they were able to take the win over local opponent Santa Clara. It will be interesting to see if they can pull through with an at-home advantage against ASU.

The Sun Devils have more experience on their side while the Spartans are working with a young dynamic.

In the last match, three of  five Spartan goals were all netted by freshmen. Lili Urvari and Tyanna Supreme have made huge improvements in the pool, and continue to put up points.

Both teams have alert and experienced players in front of the net. Spartan starting goalie, senior Katelynn Thompson, and Sun Devil goalie Mia Rycraw both average 10 saves per game.

ASU has proven to be strong defensively as they kept UC Berkeley down to six points, but SJSU allowed the Bears to score 13.

Both teams are hungry for a win. The Sun Devils are striving to end a three-game losing streak, and both will be fighting for that first conference victory.

The match starts at 5 p.m.
