San Jose State’s all-time three-point leader Ryan Welage will join Big East powerhouse Xavier, as noted on his Twitter account.
Welage ranked fourth in the Mountain West in scoring with 18.1 points per game as a junior in 2017.
“I want to thank my family and friends for all the support they’ve given me during this process,” Welage said. “I’m excited to say I am going to be attending Xavier University for my senior year.”
Welage and two other Spartans made the announcement back on March 16 that they will transfer out of SJSU and explore other options.
According to CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein, Welage narrowed his list to Baylor, Xavier, Belmont, UNC Greensboro and Loyola Chicago last Thursday.
In an exclusive interview with The Spear after he made his initial announcement, he indicated he wanted to play closer to home.
The Greensburg, Ind. native will now play 60 miles away from home inside the Cintas Center.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Welage plans on gaining immediate eligibility next season as a graduate transfer.
The Musketeers are coming off a 29-6 season which included a 15-3 Big East record.
The former SJSU forward will play under first-year head coach Travis Steele, a longtime assistant with Xavier, who’s helped the team to five Sweet 16 appearances in the last decade.
Along with accolades earned on the hardwood, the two-time Academic All-Mountain West honoree will graduate with a Kinesiology degree from SJSU this summer.
