For the third time this season, San Jose State women’s water polo team will face the top team in the nation, UC Berkeley.
The No. 21 Spartans (9-13) enter Saturday having won five of their last seven matches, but the Bears (16-3) are no strangers to winning, as they’ve won four straight and six of eight.
Back on Feb. 3, the Bears won easily over SJSU, 18-3.
Berkeley currently holds a one-point lead over Stanford in the national rankings 98-97, but are considered tied for first in the nation according to the NCAA.
The only losses for the Bears this season are No. 2 Stanford and back-to-back defeats to No. 3 USC and No. 4 UCLA. Comparing those opponents to SJSU, the Spartans have not came close to either one of them this year, falling by at least 10 to each school.
Despite large losses for the Spartans, they do have experience winning against Cal.
In the beginning of the season, the Spartans played the Bears in an exhibition match where they had a victory of 9-7 over the Bears.
The Spartans are coming off a 9-5 win against Santa Clara last Saturday. Aguara Garcia-Delgado led the team with three goals and Peters had ten saves.
SJSU will have to keep its momentum high early on if it wants a chance to upset the nation’s best.
The match is set for 5 p.m.
