Spartans hit Santa Cruz for match against the Dons

By Jenae Mims (@jenaemims_):

It will be a “battle of the bay” in Santa Cruz this Friday for San Jose State Beach Volleyball as they face off against the University of San Francisco for its first regular season conference match.

Last weekend at the Monterey College Invitational included a loss to Arizona, 4-1, and a 5-0 sweep over Santa Clara.

Both the Spartans (6-9) and Dons (2-6) have wins over Santa Clara (1-7) this season and losses to Pacific and No.14 Stanford.

This will be the first of two matchups this season that the Spartans will play the Dons. Last year, SJSU had a 5-0 win over San Francisco both times they met.

San Francisco is coming off a 4-1 loss to St. Mary’s where graduate student Sabrina Blackwell and freshman Erica Ronda were the only pair to win a set.

The Spartan pair to look for this Friday will be junior Julia Golbeck and senior Ciara Reistad.

The couple were the only ones to earn a point against the Wildcats last Sunday, winning in three sets. They went back-to-back with another win against Santa Clara.

Following the match against the Dons, SJSU will have a break of almost two weeks until they return to play at St. Mary’s.

The match starts at 4 p.m.
