For most, it’s a challenge to beat an all-time, San Jose State swimming and diving record. For senior Colleen Humel, however, she shattered and rewrote the Mountain West conference 200m backstroke record at the College Swimming Coaches of America Invitational Saturday with a 1:53.6.

She went on the win the Swimmer of the Meet award but the award and 200m backstroke are just one of Humel’s many career accomplishments. Take a look at all of the SJSU backstroke records from 50 to 200 yards and Humel’s name is now listed beside all of them.

Her swim propelled SJSU to punch in at fifth place out of 31 teams. Overall, the team finished with 325 points while Florida International took first with 598.5 points.

Senior Brittany Heng hit the wall fourth in the 100 freestyle with a 49.85. She and Humel were also part of the 400 freestyle relay with her sister, sophomore Gabby Heng and junior Brenna Bushey. The 400 freestyle squad also took fourth with a 3:20.98.

“Qualifying for post-season is a great milestone for any student-athlete,” said head coach Sage Hopkins to SJSU Athletics. “To perform the way we did puts a big exclamation mark on that milestone.”

Pending qualification to the NCAA Division I swimming and diving championships later this week, the meet closes Humel and Brittany Heng collegiate swim careers, but regardless the two will finish well decorated.
