Spartans put up a fight, but bullpen crumbles late

Despite having led three times, San Jose State baseball dropped its second game against Nevada, 10-9.

The Spartans’ (6-8, 0-4 MW) pitching crumbled in important situations as the Wolf Pack (6-5, 4-1 MW) extended the SJSU’s conference losing streak.

Seniors Brett Bautista and Shane Timmons hit their first and second home runs of the season, respectively. Bautista went 3-for-4 with two RBIs Saturday.

Junior Andrew Mitchel took the mound for his second start of the season for SJSU and gave up five earned runs. All four Spartan pitchers gave up at least one run.

The support was spread out for the Wolf Pack as seven players had one RBI and three had two.

The Spartans rode the 4-1 lead into the fifth, but five runs in the frame made it 6-4 in a heartbeat.

Trying to regain the lead, the Spartans tied the game 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning but fell short again after a three-run eighth inning for the Wolf Pack.

In the ninth though, the Spartans came back again. A leadoff triple by Kellen Strahm followed by a Bautista single made it a two-run game. Timmons stepped up and crushed one to left, tying the game again.

The Wolf Pack took advantage of the Spartan bullpen one more time as a bases-loaded walk off sac fly ended it.

The Spartans will try to prevent a sweep as they’ll get their fifth try at a conference win tomorrow at noon.
