With 12 games under its belt, San Jose State baseball hopes to hit its way above .500 this weekend against a fellow Mountain West rival University of Nevada.
It will be the first time the Spartans (6-6, MW 0-2) travel out of California as they head to Reno, the home of the Wolf Pack (5-6, MW 2-1) for a three-game series.
SJSU beat UNR four of six games last season, but three of the four wins were in Municipal Stadium. Five of the six games were decided by one run.
The two teams both finished with 19 wins last season but Nevada had one more loss than SJSU and finished last in the conference.
Wolf Pack senior Grant Fennell is the team’s best hitter posting a .405 batting average with a .548 slugging percentage. The senior is ranked as the No. 5 hitter in the conference.
Spartan seniors David Campbell, Brett Bautista, Chris Williams, Kyle Morrison and Shane Timmons have combined for 36 of the 56 team’s RBIs. Williams leads the team with a .319 batting average among those with at least 30 at bats.
UNR freshman starter Jake Jackson comes in second in two categories in the conference with a 0.47 ERA through 19 innings pitched and 27 strikeouts.
If the Spartans are able to get to the Wolf Pack’s bullpen, they will have a better chance of taking two of the three games in the series.
The first and second games of the series start at 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. They will wrap up the series Sunday at noon.
