Spartans upset bid falls short against Stanford

By Mohamed Bafakih (@MohamedABafa):

With a 2-0 lead in hand, San Jose State’s beach volleyball team wasn’t able to finish off the upset as No. 15 Stanford rallied to a 3-2 win Wednesday afternoon at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.

No. 4 pair of junior Luiza Andrade and sophomore Thaliana Grajeda gave the Spartans (3-3) an advantage early with a 21-19, 15-21, 15-12 win over sophomore Caitlin Keefe and senior Catherine Raquel of the Cardinal (5-4).

SJSU continued to build its lead with another three-set victory behind No. 5 seniors Breann Robinson and Summer Avery’s 21-13, 11-21, 15-9 performance against sophomore Kat Anderson and junior Payton Chang.

Stanford came in winners of its last four after starting off the season 0-4 and wasn’t ready for its win streak to come to an end.

The Cardinal swept the next three matches with ease as pairs 1-3 took each of the two sets.

SJSU has lost three straight duals and will look to end the losing streak when it returns to Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium this weekend for the Stanford Invitational.

Tough competition lies ahead for the Spartans as they’ll face Arizona State (4-1) and No. 21 Tulane (2-1) on March 9 and Boise State and UC Berkeley (3-1) on March 10.
