Getting its first action in the Louisville Slugger tournament, San Jose State softball defeated the Wagner Seahawks 3-0 but inclement forecasts cancelled its second game after four innings against the Providence Friars.
The Spartans (11-7) scored all three runs in the first two innings on just six hits against the Seahawks (2-4).
Junior starting pitcher Madison Aurin put SJSU on the board with an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0 after the first inning.
In the following frame, senior shortstop Emma Entzminger reached on an error by Seahawks’ sophomore shortstop Alyssa Tucker. Junior catcher Alyssa Avila scored for the second run.
Sophomore second baseman Cassidy Clark’s RBI single to right center scored freshman left fielder Desiree Reyes, marking the last of the team’s scoring.
That was all the run support Aurin needed as she threw a two-hit complete game for her third win on the year. In her last two starts, she has two shutout wins, and just three hits allowed. She also has not allowed an earned run in 21 consecutive innings pitched.
The Spartan offense produced 10 hits with Reyes contributing three of them.
Shortly after their win against the Seahawks, SJSU took on the Friars for their second game in the doubleheader.
Rain and lighting started in the fourth inning with the Spartans up 2-0 and after the third out, the umpires called the tarp crew. After almost an hour delay, the game was called because of weather.
The result of the game will not affect SJSU’s record.
The Spartans will conclude the tournament tomorrow morning in a new game against the Friars. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m.
