Madison Aurin tossed a one-hit shutout in San Jose State softball’s 9-0 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos Wednesday night.
The junior struck out five and moved to 2-6 on the season.
“She had some tough losses. It was good to get some run support,” said assistant head coach Chase Turner, filling in for head coach Peter Turner. “Her throwing up a one-hitter is one of the best things you can ask for on her birthday.”
Last week against the No. 5 Oregon Ducks, Peter was issued a one-game suspension after an ejection.
The Spartans (10-7) ended their three-game losing streak and spoiled the Broncos’ (0-10) opening night.
“Our girls came out with a bunch of energy,” Chase said. “It’s easy to come out here, lay an egg and look over these guys, especially with them not having a win yet. You know they’re going to be hungry.”
In the second inning, junior catcher Alyssa Avila got SJSU on the board first with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring sophomore first baseman Georgia Blair.
Sophomore second baseman Cassidy Clark made it 2-0 with an RBI triple in the following frame. She later crossed the plate for the third run from Blair’s RBI single.
The offense kept rolling as it scored four more runs in the fourth to make it 7-0.
Sophomore Aubree Kim and freshman Lauren Schiek both allowed bases-loaded walks that scored two runs.
Blair’s RBI single and sophomore Kaelin Amrein’s sacrifice fly scored two more in the inning.
SJSU tacked on their last two runs of the game in the sixth inning.
Freshman third baseman Rayohna Sagapolu’s RBI single and an error on Broncos’ sophomore catcher Hannah Russell plated freshman pinch runner Maricela Matos and Amrein.
Blair was 3-for-3 to lead the SJSU offense in the 9-0 win. Her and Clark both had 2 RBIs on the night.
The Spartans will look to keep the momentum rolling in the Louisville Slugger tournament this weekend. They will face three teams in five games starting at 11 a.m. Friday.
