San Jose State’s women’s track and field team travels to Albuquerque, N.M. to compete in the Mountain West championships beginning Thursday.
This will be their second competition in two weeks at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Two weeks ago, the Spartan’s competed at the same location, in the Don Kirby Invitational, and did well.
“We have a lot of ladies who can be in scoring position, more so than in years past,” said SJSU Director of Track & Field Jeff Petersmeyer to SJSU athletics. “We’ve had a strong indoor season thus far and I look forward to seeing who steps up this weekend.”
Two Spartans who seemed to like the grounds in Albuquerque last time were junior Brittany Brown and senior Cambree Harbaugh.
Brown did not only finish best out of all SJSU competitors in the triple jump, she also set a new school record in the 60-meter hurdle, with an 8.50. The previous record was 8.68.
Harbough almost broke a personal record, jumping only four centimeters shorter than her personal best in the long jump, 6.05, and finished in fourth place among the field of 49.
Competing for the Spartans in the long jump side-by-side with Harbough is sophomore Destiny Longmire. She enters the championship with the conference longest jump of all competitors, 6.24, which ranks No. 15 in the country.
First to fight for the Spartans will be junior Kolbi Sims in the pentathlon on Thursday. Last year, Sims scored a new personal record at the Mountain West championship, finishing in seventh place of 14.
In total, the Spartans finished last of eleven teams in the 2017 championship.
Women’s 60-meters hurdle qualification will start Friday at 2 p.m. Women’s long jump will take place on Friday 1 p.m. The finals takes place Saturday at 12:20 p.m.
