Jones shields out Vancouver in 4-1 win

San Jose Sharks goaltender Martin Jones was a brick wall all night to the Vancouver Canucks with a career-tying 43 saves to give the Sharks a 4-1 win.

The Sharks (31-19-8) gave the Canucks (22-30-6) their sixth loss in seven games the Canadian team has played.

Left-wing forward Mikkel Boedker scored first at 8:41 in the first period to put San Jose on the scoreboard. The goal was the second in two games for Boedker.

Despite winning the Norris Trophy for “Best Defenseman” in the NHL last season,  Brent Burns came onto the ice tonight as a forward to fill the spots of injured teammate center Tomas Hertl.

However, when defenseman Jason DeMelo was hit into the boards and sent to the locker room at the start of the second period, Burns took his place as defenseman back.

Burns got the second goal of the night for San Jose in the second period with a slap-shot past Vancouver goaltender Anders Nilsson who made 26 saves in the game. When DeMelo later returned to the ice, Burns stayed at his defense post.

Three minutes into the third period, Marcus Sorensen made the game 3-0 in favor of the Sharks.

Vancouver left-wing forward Daniel Sedin scored off an assist of right-wing forward Thomas Vanek and center Henrik Sedin, giving the Canucks their one point of the night.

Center Chris Tierney capped the score at 4-1 for the Sharks at 12:33, scoring off a pass from Burns and sending the Sharks back to the locker room in victory.

San Jose will be playing of their three-game home-stay on Sunday against the Dallas Stars.

The puck will drop at 5 p.m. at SAP Center.
