DAY 1

San Jose State’s swimming and diving team started strong on day one of the four-day competition in San Antonio, Texas at the 2018 Mountain West Championships.

Senior swimmer Colleen Humel broke a school record time in the 50 backstroke as part of the 200 medley relay — a record that had not been broken in six years.

Humel swam a record time of 24.98 leadoff split in the 50 back to finish with the best time in SJSU history. The time broke Heather Denman’s 25.26 record in the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Championships.

Breaking more SJSU history was freshman Shona Spikes, junior Brenna Bushey and senior Brittany Heng, who finished the 200 medley relay in third place with a 1:38.86 time — which also broke the record from the 2012 relay team.

While not ranking in the top 10 positions, the Spartans had three of their five divers place in the 1-meter dive. Senior Cari Reiswig took 14th and sophomore Natasha Sondeno took 18th. Junior Megan Au, in her first conference championship, took 20th.

Overall, the team took sixth place with a total of 119 points. However, the team had event victories by taking third place through event one and fourth place through event two.

DAY 2

San Jose State University creeped up the 2018 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championship leaderboard during day two of the competition. No records were broken Thursday, but SJSU rose a rank to finish eighth of 10.

In the five events of day two, the eighth-place finishers had an overall score of 218 points. The Spartans ranked sixth place in the first two events of today’s competition.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, freshman Shona Spikes, senior Brittany Heng, junior Brenna Bushey and sophomore Antoinette Loya took sixth with a final time of 1:31.88. For the Spartans, 1:31.88 is an improvement from 2017’s MW Championship time of 1:32.95.

In the three-meter diving competition, senior Kylie Fonseca took 12th with a final score of 249.93, ranking the team in sixth place for this event. Compared to 2017’s MW three-meter diving score of 270.80, Fonseca took a small setback this year.

The Spartans took eighth place in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley with Boise State leading in second and third place.

The Broncos continued to dominate in the water and brought home first in the 50-yard freestyle. Meanwhile, the Spartans finished in fifth behind Wyoming. Heng scored a 22.85 time taking fifth in this event.
