UC Berkeley’s Sanfilippo accepts SJSU interim head coach position

San Jose State athletic director Marie Tuite announced Monday that Brad Sanfilippo has accepted the position of interim head baseball coach with the Spartans.

With head coach Jason Hawkins put on administrative leave in mid-January, the Spartans were clueless who would lead the season kick-off game against Northern Colorado on Feb. 16.

Less than three weeks away from opening day, the team finally got its answer in Sanfilippo.

Sanfilippo has an extensive coaching background and ties to SJSU. He was an assistant for the Spartans in 2013 and 2014.

All his head coaching experience is at the high school level. He coached at Willow Glenn High school from 2002-2003 and Los Gatos high school from 2004-2009 where he won league championships in 2005-07 and 2009.

He has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of California. He was also an assistant there from 2009-2012 where the team appeared in two NCAA regionals and in the College World series tournament in 2011.

He will definitely bring a wealth of coaching experience to the Spartans, only most of it is an assistant or at the high school level.

As of now, no comment on when or if Jason Hawkins’ will return.
