San Jose State’s women’s swimming team returned to action after 19 days to a 132-78 loss against Cal Wednesday afternoon at UC Berkeley.
The Spartans (1-1) were away from The Bay and busy prior to their second dual meet as they competed in invitationals in Cincinnati, Ohio and Flagstaff, Arizona, before attending the U.S. Winter Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.
The Bears (5-0) opened up the meet with three relay victories — 3×100 backstroke, 3×100 breaststroke and 3×100 butterfly.
In the backstroke relay, SJSU came just over five seconds short behind freshman Maddy Grimes and seniors Colleen Humel and Taylor Lehr. Cal managed to run away with the breaststroke and butterfly relays, however, by a combined 27-second advantage.
In the individual events, the Bears continued their poise in the water by winning the next five events.
Humel came on top in the 150-yard backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 28 seconds to end the streak.
Her first-place finish wound up being the only win for the team in the 12 events.
This is the third year in a row that the Bears have bested the Spartans.
SJSU will travel to Cal State Bakersfield on New Year’s Eve for a dual meet with the Roadrunners.
