The San Jose State’s women’s basketball team is a young team that currently boast seven freshman on its roster.
Among the freshman group, guards Danae Marquez and Megan Anderson donned Golden Eagle uniforms at West Clovis High School in Fresno before playing as Spartans. The pair have been finding minutes regularly and are looking more comfortable in the Spartan system.
Marquez in particular has looked more poised and has had her two highest-scoring performances in the last three games.
The Spartans should look into the possibility of playing a three-guard set with Marquez, Anderson and sophomore Taylor Turney. Playing these three together should make things easier on offense because of the spacing that Anderson and Marquez would provide.
Marquez has attempted the third most three pointers on the team (32) and has converted on 31.3 percent from deep. Meanwhile, Anderson has the highest three-point field goal percentage (min. 20 field goals) with a scorching 43.5 percent from downtown.
Having Marquez and Anderson on the floor would stretch the oppositions defense allowing the Spartans frontcourt players more room to operate in the low post.
The spacing would also allow for more cuts to the rim in backdoor screen situations but most importantly Turney would have more space to dribble past her defender and be able to shoot less contested shots near the rim and in the mid-range.
The three-guard set does come with its liabilities, especially on defence as the Spartans would be giving up some size in order to play this rotation, but its not like the team is tall either.
If practiced enough, this rotation could be the spark the team needs on those off-shooting nights and when trailing late to score in bunches.
