Free throws hurt Spartans in loss to Vikings

By Carlos Jimenez (@carlosjimmenezz):

Following a win in their home opener against CSU Bakersfield, San Jose State women’s basketball (1-2) lost 90-78 in their second home game to the Portland State Vikings (1-3).

The Spartans settled for the jump shot often and ended the game having only converted on 13 of their 39 three-point shot attempts.

Meanwhile, the Vikings sought to attack the rim and were able to get to the line 37 times compared to the Spartans 10 attempts from the charity stripe.

“We fouled way too much,” said freshman point guard Danae Marquez. “We can’t get over aggressive on our defense and I think we were a little bit.”

Defensively, the Spartans started out with a zone defense, but after allowing too many corner threes head coach Jamie Craighead had seen enough and switched to a man-on-man defense.

“Our kids didn’t move very well out of our zone and they got corner three, corner three, corner three,” Craighead said.

The Spartans were able to find their rhythm in the second half after a slow first half, but could not recover from the 16-point deficit heading into halftime.

“We battled that’s probably all I can say in terms of what I saw out there that was good,” Craighead. “But you can’t play one half of basketball, you can’t play one end of the court and that’s all I saw.”

Turney led the Spartans in scoring for the second straight game with 21 points and the Vikings Sydney Rielley led all scores with 28.

SJSU’s next game will be on Nov. 24 on the road against Pacific University.
