San Jose State women’s basketball (1-1, 0-0 MW) will try and build off of its 10 point win against Cal State Bakersfield when it faces off against the winless Portland State Vikings (0-3).
The Spartans seemed to find their stride on the defensive side of the ball forcing 23 turnovers and scoring 20 points off those turnovers against the Roadrunners.
SJSU is hopeful that the stellar play of sophomore point guard Taylor Turney will continue as she leads the team through two games averaging 12 points and 5.5 assists per game.
The team has also gotten a healthy dose of scoring and rebounding from senior guard Myzhanique Ladd, who coming into the 2017-2018 season, ranked 11th all time in rebounding in program history.
She averages 10 points a game and leads the team with 8 rebounds per contest. Last night, a late 9-0 run led by Turney and Ladd capped off the victory for SJSU.
On the other side of the ball, the Spartans will look to contain Vikings junior guard Sidney Riley. Through three games, she has averaged 19.3 points a game while shooting 47 percent from the field and 46 percent from downtown.
The Santa Clara transfer has broken countless milestones in Portland becoming the first Viking to score 30 points in a game since 2010 and the first woman to hit the 500 point mark in a single season since 08-09 for that program.
In addition, she was an All-Big Sky Third Team selection and shot 53 percent from the floor last year, marking the best percentage for a true shooting guard in the entire country. The Spartans will definitely have their hands full trying to stop her from having another scoring outburst.
Tip off is set to be at 2 p.m. in the Event Center.
