Like most that go to Vegas, the Spartans went to win and did just that beating UNLV 3-1.
After being shutout by the University of New Mexico on Thursday, SJSU (16-9, 8-6 MW) came back and defeated UNLV (8-19, 4-10) 3-1.
The Spartans came out ready to take back a win and took both of the opening two sets (25-20 and 25-23). Determined to not to be swept, UNLV took the court in the third set and won it 25-18.
SJSU shook off the loss and the returned for the fourth and final set of the day to end the match 25-18.
Leading the Spartans today by a landslide was sophomore outside hitter Fernanda Vido who earned 26 of the team’s 62 kills of the match. With junior Giulia Gavio still out of the game, Vido has been making up for the loss in the team and is continuing to carry the Spartans strongly.
Senior setter Breann Robinson earned highest numbers in three different categories of the match with 53 assists, four blocks and 17 digs along with a double-double
The top Spartans player serving for the match was senior libero Jamie Hirai who had three aces in comparison to UNLV’s one.
The match helped the Spartans hold their third place in the Mountain West Conference as the season continues to wind down. UNLV was tied for ninth place with Fresno State when it headed into the weekend. The loss extended the Rebels’ losing streak to four.
The Spartans will be back home next weekend to take on the University of Wyoming on Thursday and No.28 Colorado State on Saturday.
