San Jose State women’s tennis finished its run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional championships with an overall record of 18-13. The Spartans were knocked out of the competition in the quarterfinal round.
San Jose State went undefeated in doubles on the first day of the tournament. Clara Mantaux and Jacqueline Wagner, Sybille Gauvain and Miyo Kobayashi as well as Tamara Culibrk and Laura Malsert all won their first round matches. Gauvin also advanced in singles as the #3 seed in the 128 player draw on day one.
The next day saw Gauvin advance to the quarterfinals of the singles draw after a 7-5, 6-0 win over Maria Kozyreva of Saint Mary’s. She also advanced in the doubles draw alongside
Kobayashi by shutting out Seattle University’s Kyra Jung and Kelli Woodman. Culibrk and Malsert also advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating the Saint Mary’s doubles team of Kozyreva & Aubane Ville, 8-6. The Spartans finished with a record of 7-2 on the second day of the tournament.
After making the semifinals a year ago in this same tournament, Gauvin was unable to hold off Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford who was seeded #7 in the singles draw. She defeated Gauvin in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 6-3. The doubles team of Culibrk and Malsert ended up losing 8-4 to the #1 seeded team from Cal pair consisting of Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic.
The fall tournament season will conclude for the Spartans at the Bronco Invitational at Santa Clara University from Nov. 3-5.
