San Jose State’s women’s soccer team (9-5-1, 6-1-1 MW) has a chance to clinch the Mountain West regular season title for the first time in the program’s history this weekend.
The Spartans have come close the last two seasons with second place finishes in both 2015 and 2016 yet haven’t been able to stand atop the mountain.
After Sunday’s 3-2 comeback victory against UNLV (12-5, 4-4 MW) the Spartans lead the conference with 19 points.
Sunday’s game did not have a promising start as the Spartans found themselves in a 2-0 deficit at the half.
SJSU was able to turn it around in the second half scoring three unanswered, including a game winner in the 83rd minute.
The clutch victory placed the Spartans four points clear of second place teams Air Force (7-5-3, 4-1-3 MW) and New Mexico (10-6, 5-3 MW).
With only three games remaining in the regular season and two of those games will in the coming days.
Colorado College (5-7-4, 2-4-2 MW), who currently holds 11th place in the conference, will host the Spartans on Friday,
Then on Sunday the Spartans will host second place Air Force in a game that is essential to both teams hopes of finishing in first place. Last year’s matchup ended in a 3-1 Spartan road win.
A win in both games this weekend will put an end to the battle for first place, cement a conference title and see the Spartans do something they have never done before.
