San Jose State women’s soccer team (2-7-2, 1-3-0 MW) were bested by the University of Wyoming (9-3-0, 2-1-0 MW) in its 4-0 loss on Wednesday at Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie, Wyo.
The Cowgirls scored in the 11th minute when freshman forward Isabel Vasco dribbled past the Spartan defense and found the top-right corner of the net. Vasco scored again in the 59th minute to give Wyoming a 4-0 lead.
SJSU had an early scoring opportunity in the second minute after a handball in the box resulted in a penalty kick. Senior forward Paige Pineda-Aliamus took the kick and was blocked by senior goalkeeper Haley Bartel.
“In those moments, we have to look to put those chances away,” SJSU head coach Sonia Curvelo said to Spartan Athletics.
The Spartans totaled 7 shots compared to the Cowgirls’ 20. Wyoming dominated in its attacking third, also totaling 5 corners.
“Our opponent did good to execute their plays and their game plans,” Curvelo said. “We can’t give a lot of space against a good team that takes really good shots inside the box.”
The Spartans’ defense did as much as they could to resist Wyoming, forcing 6 offsides calls and junior goalkeeper Paige Fry recording 6 saves.
SJSU remains in the bottom half of the Mountain West Conference standings as they look forward to its next game at home.
“There’s nothing we can do about this match,” Curvelo said. “We have to look at just improving and getting ready for our next play.”
The Spartans will go up against Colorado College at noon Sunday at the Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose, Calif.
