San Jose State women’s soccer (2-6-2) defeated the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (3-5-3), 4-1 on Saturday at Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose, Calif.
Junior forward Indigo Sims battled through the Rebels’ defense and scored into the bottom left of the goal in the 60th minute for the 2-1 lead.
“I just saw it was me, the girl that was on me, and the girl in front of me,” Sims said. “I just got to do what I got to do.”
Sims scored in the 72nd minute with a powerful shot to the right side of the goal off a cross from freshman forward Abigail Peterman, putting SJSU ahead 3-1.
“I told her, ‘You got to be more selfish in the box,’” SJSU head coach Sonia Curvelo said. “I’m really glad she got it today, and she got 2.”
The Spartans rallied after trailing 1-0 at halftime. Freshman defender Sophia Daily scored the equalizer in the 54th minute, shooting over the goalkeeper and hitting off the top crossbar into the net.
“I’ve been dreaming for this moment,” Daily said. “I’ve been waiting for that ball to come, for me to just take the shot, and it was crazy.”
The Spartans totaled 25 shots, with 13 on target, creating multiple opportunities and dominating throughout the game.
“Everything came together,” Curvelo said. “Really proud of the group when it came to the attacking mentality, and also defensively as well.”
Junior goalkeeper Paige Fry made crucial back-to-back saves to keep the Rebels out of the goal in the 55th minute. She recorded 4 saves in the game.
“Just being in the right spot at the right time and making a good decision,” Fry said. “Defense was there to back me up and clear that ball out.”
Senior forward Paige Pineda-Aliamus scored the fourth goal in the 84th minute, capitalizing on a rebound from the goalkeeper, saving a shot from Peterman.
SJSU won its first conference game and its second game this season, both at home.
The Spartans will face the University of Wyoming at 2 p.m., Wednesday at Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie, Wyo.
