Sunday afternoon, the Spartans defense held up against the Huskies as they inked their first conference win of the season. San Jose State (3-9-1, 1-3-1 WAC), went on the road to take on Houston Baptist, and left with the win by a final score of 1-0.
SJSU’s senior defender, Carlos Valdovinos managed to score the lone goal of the game in the 55th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Jonathan Partida.
The Spartans also led the exhibition in fouls committed by a tally of 16-9.
San Jose State’s first shot came from Valdovinos in the 5th minute, but was blocked. Junior Andrew Mendoza came right back with another shot attempt the following minute.
The offense looked ready to attack from the start, and by the end of the game the Spartans racked up a total of 20 shots, compared to the Huskies 13.
There were no red cards given out in the game. However, SJSU’s Joe Kay and Max Allen each received a yellow card, while HBU’s Jose Palomino and Darrell Johnson were each yellow-carded as well.
Jeremy Romero — San Jose State’s go-to when it comes to scoring — led both teams in total shots with 6 but was unable to convert them into goals throughout the game.
The Spartans defense shined in today’s match, as they managed to keep the Huskies scoreless.
Even with the win, the Spartans are second-to-last place in the WAC, having lost four of five conference games.
Moving forward, a lot of questions surround SJSU’s offense, as they have only scored four goals in conference play.
The Spartans look to stay in the win column as they head to Texas to play another conference matchup with Incarnate Word this Friday at 5 p.m.
