It wasn’t the redemption match the Spartans were looking for when they took on the University of Wyoming this afternoon.
After losing to Colorado State on Thursday, SJSU was ready to take on Wyoming to fight for second place in the Mountain West conference.
The loss was the fourth for SJSU (12-7, 4-4 MW) and extended the winning streak for the Cowgirls (11-9, 6-2 MW) to five games.
Shutting out the Spartans secured second place in the conference and pushed the Spartans back to third where they were just a few weeks ago.
The Cowgirls came out hot in the first set and barely let the Spartans score, taking them down quickly 25-10. SJSU doubled its points to 20 in the second match, which was still not enough to steal a set from Wyoming. The Cowgirls sealed the win for themselves in the third set when they took the Spartans down for the final time 25-17.
Senior middle blocker Nandyala Gama and junior outside hitter Giulia Gavio led SJSU in kills today with eight each. Junior libero Luiza Andrade led her team in digs once again with seven.
Wyoming led the match across the board kills (40-28), blocks (12-3) and with hitting percentages (.375-.022). This was the second sweep of the weekend for the Cowgirls, who swept the University of Nevada, Reno on Thursday as well.
This weekend is the only weekend the Spartans will be away, giving them a few games on home court which could be the advantage that they are looking for.
The Spartans will be returning to Spartan Gym on Tuesday when they play the University of Nevada, Reno at 6 p.m.
