Simon Tobin will officially retire from his duties as SJSU head coach on August 31, as he announced earlier today.

Tobin previously disclosed that his tenure would come to a close after the 2025 season.

This ends his 12-year tenure with the Spartans, which has brought the program to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament every year since 2017. The Spartans reached the championship game in 2017, 2018, 2022, 2024 and 2025.

“We are incredibly grateful for Simon’s dedication, leadership, and the countless hours he has invested in developing our student-athletes and building this soccer program,” said Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. “Having had the opportunity to work alongside Simon at both Cal State Bakersfield and San Jose State has been tremendous, and I have great respect for the impact he has made throughout his career.”

Associate head coach Jesus “Chuy” Sanchez will take the reins as interim head coach of the Spartans, having been at Tobin’s side for nine seasons.

It was believed among those close to the team, including Tobin, that Sanchez had the potential to succeed Tobin as head coach. He has now earned that opportunity this season.

“Chuy Sanchez will serve as our interim head coach for our program, as he has learned under coach Tobin,” Konya added. “[He] understands the culture and expectations that have been established, and is well positioned to provide continuity for our student-athletes. We look forward to Coach Sanchez building on that foundation.”

In the most surprising bit of news, former SJSU assistant coach Jamie Reid returns after a brief stint at San Diego State University earlier this year. He helped bring SJSU to two WAC finals in back-to-back years and will take the role of associate head coach in his third season with the Spartans.

More information to follow in the coming week.
