It doesn’t get more exciting than a fifth set in the sport of volleyball.
The Spartan women’s volleyball team forced conference rival New Mexico into a fifth set and ended up winning it, 15-13.
“When in the locker room, there’s a lot of determination, you can see it in their eyes,” said SJSU head coach Jolene Shepardson.
After being down 2-1, her team won two of the next three sets to steal the match.
“I’m really proud of us,”said senior setter Breann Robinson. “It was a grind but we persevered and got it done.”
Robinson played the whole game and wasn’t worried about trailing early on, knowing her team has the ability to come from behind.
“Volleyball is a huge momentum game,”said senior libero Jaime Hirai. “It’s just up and down and whoever comes out on top at the end.”
The Spartans, who have done well on the road, are looking forward to next weekend’s trips to Colorado and Wyoming.
“When we are playing away, we try to make their home court our home court, nothing changes,” said senior middle blocker Nandyala Gama, who is just three kills away from 1,000 for her career.
After this nail-biter of a game, the Spartans will head to Fort Collins to take on Mountain West leader Colorado State.
The match is set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
