San Jose State baseball (3-5, 0-0 MW) took a tough 5-4 loss to Saint Mary’s (5-3, 0-0 WCC) on Friday morning at Louis Guisto Field at Br. Ronald Gallagher Stadium in Moraga, Calif.
In the middle of the 13th inning, after SJSU had gotten off the field, the lights at Louis Guisto Field went out, causing the game that originally started on Thursday, Feb. 26 to be suspended until the next day.
Once play resumed, sophomore first baseman Makoa Sniffen immediately walked it off in the bottom of the 13th inning with an RBI that brought home senior second baseman Cody Kashimoto.
The Spartans had a 3-0 lead early in the second inning thanks to RBIs from senior right fielder Alex Fernandes and senior shortstop Rocco Caballero.
That lead would soon fade away after Sniffen hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Gaels sophomore left fielder Micah Nicholson and junior center fielder Tanner Griffith each hit an RBI to give Saint Mary’s a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning.
Caballero’s second RBI of the game would send the game into extras in the ninth inning.
Both Fernandes and Caballero would finish the game with 2 RBIs.
Pitching once again plagued the Spartans as Sniffen recorded five hits against Spartan pitchers. The Spartans would give up 14 hits overall and walk six batters.
Spartans senior pitcher Jesse Gutierrez attempted to stabilize the game after earlier pitching struggles, but his only inning pitched would result in the winning run for the Gaels.
The Spartans will play Saint Mary’s again in their second game of a four game series at 2:05 p.m. on Friday at Louis Guisto Field at Br. Ronald Gallagher Stadium in Moraga, Calif.
