In its first game of the last day of the Mustang Classic, San Jose State softball(4-10, 0-0 MW) dominated all seven innings against the University of Pacific (4-11), winning 10-1.
Coming off a massive 15-3 win against Manhattan on Saturday, SJSU kept its high energy leading into this game. The Spartans had a total of 14 hits today with a strong offensive and defensive effort, overall contributing to their 10-1 win over Pacific.
“Offense came out hot, …we scored five out of the six innings today,” SJSU head coach Tammy Lohmann said via SJSU Athletics.
The Spartans started the game off strong today with a double by senior infielder Ahmiya Noriega, followed by a single from junior outfielder Carly Cummings to bring in Noriega in the top of the first inning. The second inning resulted in two more runs scored from Noriega’s sac fly and Cummings’ double to left field.
Along with Noriega and Cummings, senior utility player Reina Zermeno helped lead the offense, with all three contributing half of the Spartans’ hits.
Zermeno went 2-3, hitting a three-run home run in the fourth and a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Her first and second home runs of the season.
Freshman pitcher Delaney Faus pitched all seven innings, allowing only three hits and one run.
Faus had two strikeouts and two walks, and was well backed by her team’s defensive efforts. The Spartans had 21 putouts and 12 assists on plays, only allowing one run to score.
“Delaney [Faus]…did a great job on the mound today, defense played solid behind her. …Some great growth this weekend, but a lot to learn from it, and we’ll be back out next weekend,” Lohmann said.
After this series, the Spartans move on to play in the UC Davis/Sac State Tournament from Feb. 27 to March 1. Their first game will be against Sacramento State University at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, in Sacramento, Calif.
