The San Jose State women’s basketball team (0-5) came up short on the road, falling 75-64 to Portland State (2-4) in a non-conference matchup on Saturday.
Junior guard Rylei Waugh powered the Spartans with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds, continuing her strong early-season play.
Sophomore forward Maya Anderson added nine points and seven rebounds while junior guard Allie Cummins and freshman forward Gabriela Pato each chipped in nine points as well, giving SJSU balanced scoring across the lineup.
Despite hanging close through the first half, the Spartans were outscored 20-12 in the third quarter, a swing that shifted momentum towards Portland State.
SJSU battled through a close game, which had 10 lead changes, but the Vikings’ late-game execution proved too much to overcome.
SJSU finished shooting just under 40% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc, while also leaving points at the line, only shooting 9/16.
Rebounding was a bright spot for SJSU, with 38 rebounds, including eight offensive boards from Waugh and senior guard Amira Brown combined.
Turnovers hurt SJSU’s rhythm as they committed 20 turnovers that Portland State converted into 12 points.
“We have to continue to do better and clean up some of the little things as a group,” SJSU head coach Jonas Chatterton said.
SJSU will look to regroup and secure its first win of the season as it plays at 6 p.m. on Dec. 1 when they visit No.22 Washington.
