San Jose State women’s basketball (0-1, 0-0 MW) fell to California Baptist (3-0, 0-0 MW) in a 69-55 loss on Friday.
After their game against Bethesda was postponed, the Spartans were ready to get on the court and play.
Neither SJSU nor CBU had the lead until the end of the third quarter, when CBU’s head coach, Jarrod Olson, appealed a call that gave an out-of-bounds ball to the Spartans.
The third quarter began with the score tied, 40-40, but once they changed the call and went in CBU’s favor, the Lancers gained momentum.
This led to CBU ultimately having a six-point lead by the end of the third quarter.
The Lancers maintained the lead in the game throughout the fourth quarter as well.
Players like sophomore guard/forward Maya Anderson and junior guard Rylei Waugh kept up the score in the fourth quarter, but the number of turnovers the Spartans had was ultimately what gave California Baptist the win.
The Spartans ended the game with 33 turnovers compared to the Lancers’ 12.
“We’ve got to stop giving them the ball,” SJSU head coach Jonas Chatterton said. Turnovers are just killing us right now. If we can get that cleaned up, we can be a good basketball team.”
The Lancers pressed the Spartans up the court, but SJSU was able to keep up despite their aggressive defense in the first three quarters.
“I’m really proud of our effort defensively,” Chatterson said. “We took away the three-point line from them.”
Anderson ended up with 11 total points, Waugh ended up with 12.
Senior guard Amira Brown had a great game as well. It was her first double-double of the season and she grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.
Junior guard Allie Cummins had 10 points and three assists before getting fouled out.
The Spartans return home to play UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
