For the first time in program history, the No. 7 ranked San Jose State Spartans (11-6, 5-1 WCC) are West Coast Conference co-regular season champions. The Spartans secured the title Saturday afternoon with a 14-7 win over No. 15 Cal Baptist (21-10, 3-3 WCC) in Riverside to close out conference play.
SJSU jumped out early behind a dominant first quarter, taking a 5-2 lead. Senior attacker Sam Keightley paced the Spartans with five goals, tying his season high.
Sophomore driver Samu Biros added a hat trick along with a key third-quarter steal that swung momentum, while senior attacker Erik Duesund finished with two goals and an assist.
Cal Baptist made a brief push in the second quarter with goals from sophomore attacker Andera Nuzzo, trimming the deficit to 7-5 at halftime. But the Spartans answered with a 4-1 run in the third behind Biros and Keightley, regaining full control.
Junior goalkeeper Brendon Gyapjas recorded six saves and helped the defense hold Cal Baptist to just two goals in the second half.
The Lancers were led by Nuzzo and Alex Righetti with two goals each, while junior goalkeeper Tanner McCreary tallied 11 saves despite facing constant pressure.
“We just finished a good game against Cal Baptist,” head coach Gabor Sarusi said. “We’re proud to be co-champions of the regular season in the WCC. We’re looking forward to the tournament in two weeks at Air Force.”
With the win, SJSU finishes 5-1 in WCC play and enters the upcoming conference tournament as the No. 2 seed, looking to capture the program’s first WCC Tournament championship.
Before anything, they will have to go up against No. 16 UC Irvine on Sunday at noon in Irvine, Calif.
