San Jose State women’s soccer (1-12-3, 0-5-3 MW) closed out its home schedule Thursday night with a 4-2 loss to Air Force (7-6-3, 5-2-1 MW), marking a second consecutive season without a win at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
However, freshman defender Gabrielle Germain earned herself a personal victory when she scored her first career goal for SJSU.
While the Spartans made a late push in the second half scoring two goals in five minutes, it wasn’t enough to overcome Air Force’s dominant first 45 minutes led by sophomore defender Annika Jost’s hat trick.
SJSU head coach Sonia Curvelo said her young team has continued to fight despite the record.
“They’re not putting their heads down and they’re trying to compete in every single game,” Curvelo said. “A lot of teams would throw in the towel.”
SJSU’s last home win came on Sept. 10, 2023, in a 4-0 victory over Southern Utah.
Thursday’s defeat extended a two-year drought at home, though the Spartans have shown flashes of improvement throughout the season.
“I want us to play 90 minutes,” Curvelo said. “We haven’t seen it all season.”
Curvelo said that experience is still missing, but believes the lessons learned this fall will help build toward future results.
“We’ve scored more goals than we did last year,” Curvelo said. “We have a good future here, and I really think we’re going to make a huge jump next year.”
Junior defender Leilani White had a similar mindset, focusing on what the team is gradually building behind the scenes.
“People can say whatever they want, but at the end of the day, we know the work that we’re putting in,” White said. “The main word for me is hunger—how much hunger do you really have?”
Within the team dynamics, freshman midfielder Mercedes Cioffi said that belief remains high in the locker room.
“Our culture is very good, and we’re all best friends in the changing room,” Cioffi said. “We’re always cheering and making sure that we’re encouraging others or talking about things to fix.”
Though the Spartans closed another season without a home win, the group’s youthful core and unity continue to be the program’s backbone.
SJSU will head on the road to face Utah State on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. in Logan, Ut.
