San Jose State women’s swim and dive open the season with steady performances throughout the Fresno State Invitational with multiple top-finishes in both individual events and relays.
Redshirt senior Ela Freiman finished third in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:03.95, while freshman Genevieve George posted a third finish in the 200 butterfly (2:04.40) and seventh in the 100 IM (59.76).
The meet also marked the debuts of freshmen Lillie Grover and Ava Bautista in the 100-yard butterfly, with Grover taking fourth (56.29) and Bautista in seventh (57.80).
Senior sprinter Laís E Silva placed sixth in the 50 free (23.66), followed by junior Dalton Sickon (23.78), sophomore Keira Vail (24.21) and freshman Nikki Lahey (24.32).
Junior Hannah Ernst contributed in backstroke events, placing ninth in the 100 (57.00) and 15th in the 200 (2:06.90).
In the 100 IM, junior Vilma Lindberg placed 10th (2:21.23) and in the 200 breaststroke 12th (1:00.67).
The Spartans showed off their team chemistry with consistency in the relays placing fourth in the 200 free relay (1:35.44) and sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:45.51).
As for the 800 free relay, SJSU finished sixth with a time of 7:44.47, topping off a solid first showing in relays this season.
SJSU head coach Sage Hopkins called it an “awesome first day for diving,” and especially for freshman Elinor Windram who made her debut placing sixth in three-meter diving (260.65) and seventh on the one-meter (241.70).
San Jose State returns home to host UC Davis at 10 a.m. on Oct. 18 in the SRAC, an early season opportunity to continue building on this weekend’s success.
