Freshman Etinosa Obaseki notched his first-career goal for San Jose State on Saturday night in Boise, but the University of Washington earned its first win of the season, 3-1.
It was the Spartans (1-4-1) second consecutive 3-1 loss after they dropped Friday night’s contest to Utah State.
The Huskies (1-2) had given up 14 goals in their first two games but came out alert defensively against SJSU, leading to a scoreless opening period.
Freshman defender Mac Fair managed to connect on his first collegiate goal for Washington early in the second period, putting his team up 1-0.
SJSU tied the game with four minutes remaining in the second period on Obaseki’s first-timer, but a late surge by Washington’s Keenan Smith before the frame’s end saw the Spartans down once again.
The third period presented potential goal-tying opportunities for SJSU, as it had the advantage in shots, 7-5, and faceoffs, 8-2. But Smith found Christian Cinderella alone on the right side who found the back of the net with about six minutes left in the game.
The Spartans have struggled in Idaho, as they are now winless in three games.
SJSU will quickly regroup as it hits the ice early Sunday morning to cap off the weekend against the University of Denver (3-1-1) before returning home to face crosstown rival Santa Clara University on Oct. 13.
