San Jose State women’s volleyball (6-9, 1-3 MW) couldn’t get in the groove Saturday afternoon, being swept 3-0 by Fresno State (5-10, 1-3 MW), in a lackluster loss at the Save Mart Center.

The Spartans are now under a three-game losing streak, while the Bulldogs earned their first Mountain West victory of the season taking the match in a convincing manner (25-22, 25-22, 25-21).

Despite several chances to seize momentum and change the tide of the match, SJSU struggled to maintain any lead it built.

While the Spartans dropped the first two sets with the same score, the way they lost the two sets were different.

The first set was tight with the Spartans climbing back into the set where both teams were eventually even at 20, however the Bulldogs would shut the door in a 25-22 set win.

In the second set, SJSU let the lead slip away as Fresno closed with a 7-1 run to take control of the match.

SJSU freshman outside hitter Morgan Graves and junior middleblocker Ava Hewitt-Smith each combined for 15 kills.

Set three was more of the same, the Bulldogs would confidently close out the set and squash the hopes of the Spartans.

A Spartan team-high 15 digs was produced by freshman libero Talita Dos Santos Gonçalves, but even with flashes of fight, the overall performance was abnormal for the Spartans.

Bulldogs’ senior opposite Addison Haluska stole the show with a game-high 25 kills for 26.5 points.

Head coach Todd Kress didn’t hold back in his disappointment from everyone after the loss.

“Very unlike us, no grit, no fight, no energy, no attitude,” Kress said. “It was our worst match of the season by far, and I don’t have an answer why.”

The Spartans will look to regroup as they return home to host Nevada scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Spartan Gym.
