San Jose State baseball (24-26, 11-15 MW) was shut out in a 10-0 loss to conference rival Fresno State (25-25, 16-10 MW) on Saturday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

The Spartans stayed within reach early, trailing just 3–0 heading into the sixth inning, but the Bulldogs broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning. The game ended after seven innings due to the run rule.

This is only the second time the Spartans have been held scoreless this season.

“Got beat up here in Fresno today,” SJSU head coach Brad Sanfilippo said.

Fresno State controlled the game offensively, tallying 14 hits compared to just two for SJSU.

Eight different Bulldogs recorded a hit, while only two Spartans did so.

Right fielder Alex Fernandes and third baseman Zach Chamizo each recorded a hit for the Spartans. Chamizo has now recorded a hit in 12 straight games.

Spartan’s junior right-handed pitcher David Thomas recorded four strikeouts over five innings pitched.

Thomas posted an 11.81 ERA, his second-highest of the season, surpassed only by a 20.25 ERA performance against New Mexico on April 26. In all his other outings, he has recorded a single-digit ERA.

The Bulldogs finished with two more strikeouts, as junior right-handed pitcher Aidan Cremarosa struck out six.

The Spartans will have a chance to win the series at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday in Fresno, California after winning the opener 12–10.

“Got to play better tomorrow to try to take the series,” Sanfilippo said.
