San Jose State men’s golf had eyes on second place through the first two rounds, sitting at 22 under par on April 25-27.
Led by junior Ivan Barahona, who hit -6 in round two, which was tied for his season low and junior Avinash Iyer with -5, the Spartans were in a good spot to place in the podium.
However, their worst day was at the final round, finishing seventh in the third round at even par.
“It’s a game of calculated risk, reward,” head coach John Kennaday said. “We might have pushed a little too hard and dropped a little too far in the standings, but I was really proud of how the guys played in the tournament.”
There were still a lot of positives across the board.
Senior Zubair Firdaus paved the way to put SJSU in a great position in the opening round, going seven under par through the first two rounds. He had seven birdies in the first round.
It was a rough outing for junior Jed Dy, who finished in the bottom of the standings. He had a solid first two rounds, sitting just one stroke over par. The final round was disastrous though, going +9 to wrap up his tournament.
Despite a disappointing ending result, the Spartans still had a strong outing overall to close out the 2024-25 season.
