San Jose State men’s baseball (20-23) suffered a rout against New Mexico (25-17), falling 19-3 on April 26.

The Lobos dominated the Spartans offensively, building a 12-0 lead by the end of the fifth inning.

New Mexico held the Spartans scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Spartans finally broke through with two runs. However, the Lobos answered quickly, putting up seven runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

The Spartans added one more run in the seventh, but New Mexico was able to close the game out with less than nine innings.

San Jose found some offensive rhythm throughout the game, as junior  Rocco Caballero recorded two hits and a run, and sophomore Neil Jansen chipped in with two hits and a run of his own.

The Spartans also got offensive production from redshirt senior Jeriah Lewis, who had two RBIs and one hit.

Despite some Spartans getting in a rhythm throughout the game, New Mexico had 12 players record a hit, while San Jose had six.

The Lobos also had 20 hits and 17 RBIs, while the Spartans had eight hits and three RBIs

Each Spartan pitcher allowed at least four hits today, but they combined for seven strikeouts throughout the match. This makes the strikeout count between both teams even, as the Lobos also had eight.

This now marks the second-highest number of points the Spartans have allowed this season, with their previous high being yesterday, when they allowed 25 runs.

The Spartans have lost the series, and have now lost eight games in a row, which is the most consecutive losses they’ve had in a season.

However, San Jose broke their losing streak and took a 14-23 win against New Mexico on Sunday and a 14-5 win against Cal on Wednesday.

The Spartans will now face UNLV in a three game series, the first being today at 6:05 p.m. at Excite Ballpark.
