Mountain West conference play is off to a good start for the San Jose State women’s soccer team (4-4, 1-0 MW) as they defeated the visiting Utah State Aggies (4-3-1, 0-1 MW) with a final of 2-1.
In a game where SJSU outshot the Aggies 24-10, sophomore forward Jamilecxth Becerra was the one to score the game-winner.
“I knew the ball was coming to me, I knew all I had to do is score and we win,” Becerra said. … “I had to get my head on the ball, and I did, then I saw the ball go through the goalie’s hands, I was so proud.” .
Beccera was not the only player with a strong performance. After Utah State made it a 1-0 score during the 63rd minute, the Spartan offense woke up. Just one minute after the Aggies struck, freshman forward Kiara Parker followed with a goal of her own, her first goal on the collegiate level and as a Spartan.
“It felt really good, especially after coming back from a concussion,” Parker said. … “It’s been a really hard road for me recovering, so scoring felt amazing.”
Head Coach Lauren Hanson was pleased with what she saw from her team’s first conference game of the season.
“I thought we played tremendous, we had really good possession throughout the game, I thought our movement of the ball was fantastic,” Hanson continued,” I thought our back was very composed, and our defense was solid as usual.”
The Spartans back line was stout as they only allowed four shots on goal Friday afternoon. Paige Simoneau finished the game with three saves.
Next up for the Spartans will be another home match Sunday at 12 p.m against Boise State (5-3-1, 0-0 MW).
