The Spartans showed a lot of heart in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday against the Aztecs.

The action started early for the Aztecs in the second inning after a leadoff single by outfielder CJ Moran, followed by a pair of RBIs by freshman infielder Daniel Arambula and senior catcher Evan Sipe. San Diego State was up 2-0.

San Jose State quickly responded at the top of the third inning with a score of their own after infielder Drew Giannini slammed a triple to right center field. Catcher Jake Maroney then hit an RBI single, driving Giannini in.

“The second game was a close one late and we just couldn’t find a way to close,” SJSU head coach Brad Sanfilippo said.

SDSU starting pitcher Marko Sipila managed the game well for the Aztecs, putting up an outstanding eight strikeouts on the night.

Things stayed quiet until the sixth inning when SJSU junior outfielder Jake McCoy doubled to right field, followed by an RBI by Jeriah Lewis.

The Aztecs responded urgently in the bottom of the sixth after sophomore outfielder Zane Kelly doubled the next at bat. Daniel Arambula slammed a home run to deep left field. The Aztecs were up 4-2.

The Aztecs continued their productive offensive outing in the bottom of the seventh inning after another twoRBI inning, adding to their lead.

Down 6-2 in the 9th inning, the Spartans didn’t quit scoring another two runs, but that effort wasn’t enough. The Spartans lost 6-4.
